Radish Growing Competition
Lostock commenced its radish-growing competition this term, with classes nurturing their crops and monitoring plant growth. The competition will conclude at the end of July with awards for the largest and heaviest radishes, encouraging pupils to develop practical gardening skills and deepen their understanding of plant life cycles.

No Mow May
Lostock Primary School is participating in ‘No Mow May’ at the front of school, as part of our Climate Action Plan.
By participating in ‘No Mow May’ for the second year, we’re not just letting our green areas go wild, we’re also helping to:
* Increase biodiversity by providing a variety of plants and habitats.
* Support pollinating insects like bees and butterflies.
* Create a more natural and aesthetically pleasing landscape.

Teamwork, Recycling and Forest Fun!
It was an absolute pleasure to welcome pupils from Rivington and Blackrod High School and Harper Green High School to Lostock Primary as part of our Trust Plastics Project.
Together, the children reused plastic to create planters and sow seeds in our Forest Explorer area, supporting biodiversity while working brilliantly as a team.
Children ended the day with campfire marshmallows and s’mores – such a lovely way to celebrate their hard work!

Great British Spring Clean – Leverhulme Litter Pick
Schools across Leverhulme Academy Trust came together for our now annual ‘Leverhulme Litter Pick’, as part of the Great British Spring Clean 2026. Pupils, staff and volunteers from all three schools, Rivington and Blackrod High School, Harper Green School and Lostock Primary School, joined forces to help tidy their local communities.
Building on last year’s success, our amazing ‘Climate Champions’ began the day, braving the rain in true to form ‘Great British’ weather at Rivington, collecting litter around Lever Park. Later in the morning, they moved on to Lostock, where they continued their efforts across the local area. After a well-earned break to refuel, the group headed to Harper Green, finishing the day by litter picking in nearby streets and fields. Well done, to all involved!

Eco Council Plastics Project
The Lostock Primary School Eco Council met with fellow Trust Climate Champions from Harper Green School and Rivington & Blackrod High School to kick off their collaborative Plastics Project. The focus? Reducing, reusing and recycling plastics across our school communities. We’re feeling very hopeful and excited about the positive change and impact this work will have.

Green Flag Award and VIP Recognition
We are absolutely thrilled to announce we have been successful in achieving the Eco Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction. This is the highest grade possible, meaning we have gone above and beyond the standard requirements! Congratulations to our Eco Council, our Sustainability Team, with a huge thank you to Mr Hargrove for leading the process!
In recognition of Mr Hargrove’s and Mrs Sigurnjak’s contributions to the
Sustainability Team at Lostock (as well as going above and beyond in other areas of their roles), they were both celebrated as winners of this year’s Leverhulme VIP (Values In Practice) Awards, presented during our annual INSET Day. Mr Hargrove was the winner of the Students First Award, for always going above and beyond to put pupils at the heart of everything he does. Mrs Sigurnjak was the winner of the Integrity Award, for consistently demonstrating fairness, honesty, and doing what’s right – even when no one is watching.

Wildlife and Gardening Update
At Lostock Primary School, pupils and staff have been
actively delivering on our Climate Action Plan by creating and
maintaining habitats to support local wildlife. Bird boxes and
hedgehog houses have been installed around the school grounds, providing safe spaces for birds and small animals. The sensory garden, bug hotel and school allotment are regularly cared for by our enthusiastic Gardening Club, with a particular focus on increasing planting in shaded areas. These efforts not only support biodiversity but also give children hands-on experience in caring for the environment.
